Most homeowners with heat pumps use them to heat and cool their homes. But heat pumps can also be used to heat water—either as a stand-alone water heating system or as a combination water heating and space conditioning system.

How High Temperature Heat Pump Water Heater Works

Instead of generating heat directly, heat pump water heaters use electricity to transfer heat from one place to another. As a result, they are two to three times more energy efficient than conventional resistance water heaters. To transfer heat, a heat pump works in reverse like a refrigerator.
The refrigerator draws heat from inside the box and sends it to the surrounding room, while the stand-alone air source heat pump water heater draws heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to a higher temperature to heat the water storage tank. You can buy a self-contained heat pump hot water system as an integrated unit with a built-in storage tank and backup resistance heating elements.
High Temperature Heat Pump Water Heaters do not operate effectively in cold spaces because they tend to cool the space they are in. Installing them in spaces with excess heat, such as furnace rooms, will increase their efficiency.
You can also install an air source heat pump system that combines heating, cooling and water heating. These combined systems extract heat from outdoor air in winter and indoor air in summer. Because they remove heat from the air, any type of air source heat pump system will work more efficiently in warmer climates.
Homeowners primarily install geothermal heat pumps - which absorb heat from the ground during the winter and from the indoor air during the summer - to heat and cool the home.

For air to water high temp heat pump, you can add a desuperheater to a geothermal heat pump system. A desuperheater is a small auxiliary heat exchanger that uses superheated gas from a heat pump compressor to heat water. This hot water is then circulated through pipes to the storage water heater tank in the house.
Desuperheaters are also available for tankless or on-demand water heaters. In summer, desuperheaters utilize excess heat that would otherwise be expelled to the ground. Geothermal heat pumps can meet most of your hot water needs due to their frequent operation in summer.
During fall, winter and spring -- when the desuperheater isn't producing too much heat -- you need to rely more on your storage or demand water heater. Some manufacturers also offer triple-function geothermal heat pump systems that provide heating, cooling, and hot water. They use separate heat exchangers for all of the home's hot water needs.

How to choose High Temperature Heat Pump Water Heater

Heat pump water heater systems typically have a higher initial cost than traditional storage water heaters. However, their lower operating costs can offset higher purchase and installation costs.
Here are a few more things you need to consider before purchasing a heat pump hot water system:
Size and first hour rating
Fuel Type and Availability
Energy Efficiency (Energy Factor)
Total cost

Installation and maintenance

Proper installation and maintenance of your heat pump hot water system can optimize its energy efficiency.
Proper installation depends on many factors. These factors include fuel type, climate, local building code requirements and safety concerns. Therefore, it is best to have your heat pump installed by a qualified plumbing and heating contractor (or geothermal heat pump system installer/designer).
When choosing a qualified professional, do the following:
Request a cost estimate in writing
Request reference materials
Check with your local Better Business Bureau for the company
See if the company will obtain local permits if necessary and understand local building codes.

Regular water heater maintenance can significantly extend the life of your water heater and minimize efficiency losses. Read your owner's manual for specific maintenance recommendations.
